Invasive species – Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum)

During the week, Initiative 1415 has been working to combat invasive species. Mora Aronsson, of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), was present on site when we decided how to deal with the plants.
The EU List of invasive alien species includes plants that are introduced accidentally or deliberately into a natural environment where they are not normally found, with serious negative consequences for their new environment. They are a major threat to native plants and animals in Europe and are one of the five major causes of biodiversity loss, and Giant hogweed is on the list.

Giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) is a large plant that can form very large and dense stands. It competes with native plants, thereby affecting the balance of the ecosystem and biodiversity.

This particular project has been funded by Econopack. Combating invasive species is part of Initiative 1415’s Nature Restoration project
