EU Commission presents new initiative for pollinators

The European Commission presented a new deal on wild pollinators on 24 January 2023. In light of the decline in pollinating insects in Europe, an EU initiative on pollinators was presented back in 2018. However, following strong public demand for more decisive action, the New Deal includes additional measures for the EU and its member states to strengthen efforts for pollinators.

The new deal for wild pollinators will play a significant role in the EU’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, which aims to slow down the degradation of ecosystems and protect nature through a comprehensive, ambitious and long-term plan. The revision will thus contribute to the objectives of the EU Green Deal. The initiative for wild pollinators takes the form of a communication and therefore has no legal effect.
